MEXT Scholars

Procedures for Receiving Your Scholarship

  1. MEXT Scholars are required to open a bank account of Japan Post Bank to receive the scholarship. A copy of Yucho bankbook should be submitted to the International Affairs Division promptly.
  2. MEXT scholars must make sure to sign and date the attendance check list every month in person in order to receive the scholarship. If we cannot check the student’s signature, we cannot pay the scholarship to them for any reason. We have two deadlines each month. If the students sign by the first deadline, they can receive the scholarship in the same month.

* Please sign on scholarship student list. Late confirmation will result in late payment of the scholarship. So please come to International Affairs Division for the signature on the 1st day every month. Signature for the previous month or the later month is not allowed. You can not sign on the days the University is closed. No Sign, No Scholarship.

For the schedule of the deadline and paydays, please see the following:

Extension of the period of the Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship

When Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship students intend to enter the upper course of study (①from research student to the Master’s course or the Doctoral course,② from the Master’s course to the Doctoral course), they have to apply for the extension of the period of the Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship. International Affairs Division will inform students who are eligible for scholarship extension of necessary procedures when notification from MEXT has arrived, usually in November.

If you are an Embassy Recommendation MEXT Scholar and have enrolled in April and willing to enroll in Master or Doctor course in October in the same year, you need to apply in May.)

Besides the scholarship extension, you must also apply for and pass the entrance examination of appropriate degree program. Please check the admission page of university website to find more information on entrance examinations of our graduate programs.

However, please note that not all applicants may be accepted for extension by MEXT as MEXT is limiting the number of students who could extend the scholarship.

Certificate of Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship students

MEXT Scholars may be required to provide proof that they are Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship students in certain instances, such as when extending the period of their student visa. In order to obtain a copy of the Certificate of Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Student, they need to submit an application at the International Affairs Division. It takes about 1 week to issue the certificate after the office receives the application.

Part-time job

International students of the Japanese Government Scholarship program (MEXT Scholarship) are guaranteed to be provided with sufficient financial resources, allowing students to focus on their academic studies without having to worry about financial problems. Therefore, it is neither recommended nor consistent with the spirit of the program for Japanese Government Scholarship students to obtain a conditional work permit with the intention of saving money through part-time work.

In cases where students are directly engaged in assisting education or research at Saga University, such as a TA, RA, or Tutor for international students, a conditional work permit is not required.

Traveling Allowance for Returning Home

MEXT scholars who are planning to return to their home countries after their scholarship payment period expire can apply for a return ticket provided by MEXT. You need to apply to International Affairs Division at least 45 days before you plan to leave if you will graduate in September, or by the middle of December if you will graduate in March. International Affairs Division will notify the eligible students of details about the procedure.

In the following cases, you cannot apply for MEXT return tickets:

  • When you do not return to your home country by the designated date
  • When you do not apply for a return ticket by the specified date
  • When you return to your home country in the middle of the period of the scholarship due to your individual reason
  • When you continue to stay in Japan after the expiry of the scholarship payment period

If you have any questions please feel free to contact International Affairs Division.
