Vice President MISHIMA Nobuo Attends Academic Exchange Agreement Signing Ceremony with Vienna University of Technology

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Saga University’s Vice President for International Affairs, MISHIMA Nobuo, attended the signing ceremony for an academic exchange agreement with the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) as a representative of the university. He signed the agreement with Professor Peter Ertl, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and International Affairs at TU Wien, and discussed future research and student exchanges.

The relationship between Saga University and TU Wien dates back to 1990 when Vice President Mishima was sent as the first official exchange student from Japan (Austrian Government Scholarship). In 1998, as a lecturer at Saga University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, he was dispatched as a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) overseas researcher. Since then, based on a memorandum of understanding between TU Wien’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning and Saga University’s Department of Urban Engineering, educational and research exchanges have continued. Notably, two students from TU Wien who came to Japan obtained their master’s degrees with theses on traditional buildings in Hizen-Hamashuku. Additionally, a student who studied mechanical engineering at TU Wien will enroll in Saga University’s Graduate School of Science and Engineering as a government-sponsored student recommended by the embassy this October. These achievements have been highly evaluated by TU Wien, making Saga University the first academic exchange partner in Kyushu.

At the signing ceremony, Vice President Ertl, along with Iris Mach, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Japan-Austria Science Exchange Center (JASEC), and Thomas Rief, Senior Lecturer at JASEC, welcomed the delegation. They exchanged greetings and discussed future student exchanges and other collaborative activities. Finally, a commemorative gift from Saga University was presented.

TU Wien, although an engineering university, conducts a wide range of educational and research activities in fields such as chemistry, intelligent information systems, life sciences, regional planning, and economic engineering. At Saga University, continuous exchanges are expected, not only with the Faculty of Science and Engineering but also with the Faculty of Art and Regional Design and the Faculty of Economics, leveraging the unique appeal of a regional university.
