Chiang Mai historic area was nominated and listed in the tentative list of the UNESCO world heritage in 2015. Thailand is promoting the activities for its registration of the World Heritage in 2024, not as the ruin but as the first living historic heritage in Thailand, namely “Chiang Mai, Capital of Lanna: the Historic Town and its Associated Sacred Mountain.”

Japan has a lot of experiences of living urban historic heritage such as preservation and activation of traditional towns. The trials for the preservation of town since 1960’s were developed with the introduction of the important preservation area of traditional buildings by amendment of the law for the protection of cultural properties in 1975, “Nara document” for “Buddhism buildings of Horyuji temple area” as the first world heritage in Japan and so on, then it has played a large role to the protection and use of cultural “diversity” viewing from the characteristics of the heritage in the world. These experiences would give many knowledge to Chiang Mai which is targeting the world heritage as the living urban historic town with timber architecture like Japan.

This forum is to discuss the current situation of Chiang Mai’s historic area and its future. We invite Prof. Emeritus Sadao WATANABE at the University of Tokyo who worked for the preservation of historic townscape like Imai-cho, Nara prefecture, as executive note speaker.  Regarding keynote speakers, we invite Prof. Yukio NISHIMURA at the Kokugakuin University as well as Prof. Emeritus at the University of Tokyo who has worked for selection member of UNESCO world heritage and ICOMOS committee member from Japan side, and Assoc. Prof. Yongtanit Pimonthatean who is a member of National Committee on Rattanakosin and Old Towns Conservation from Thailand side. Then, we invite some young researchers who present their research on the conservation of historic properties both from Thailand and Japan. Afterward, we would like to have panel discussion about now and next for the world heritage of Chiang Mai urban historic area.

So, we are very pleased if you are highly interested in and participate in the forum to enjoy the discussion.
